Undertale

The RPG where nobody has to die. Funny, kind and very clever about what saving a game means.

0-1What you do

A child falls into an underground world of monsters. Battles mix simple bullet-dodging with conversation: you can talk, joke or show mercy instead of fighting. The game remembers your choices, sometimes more than you expect.

0-2Who it is for

Anyone who loves characters, jokes and surprises. Combat is light, and you can get through by being kind.

1-1Save points as a story device

The glowing stars are more than save points. Characters notice them, and the game plays with the idea of saving and reloading in ways we will not spoil.

2-1Mercy

Every battle can be finished without fighting. Learning what each monster wants is the heart of the game.

3-1Short and replayable

One playthrough takes around seven hours. Many players go again to see how different choices change the story.

Power-ups

  • Brilliant writing and music
  • Pacifist options in every fight
  • Short enough to finish in a weekend

Debuffs

  • Simple graphics are not for everyone
  • Some bullet patterns get tricky

Hint

Save at every star you pass. It costs nothing and the game is watching.

Final word

A small game with a huge heart that changes how you think about saving.
